About the Role
Behind every funded initiative is a story well told. As a Grant Writer, you’ll play a key role in translating mission-driven work into compelling proposals that speak to institutional funders. Your writing will help secure resources that allow communities, programs, and partnerships to thrive.
This role is ideal for someone who’s part strategist, part storyteller. You’ll take research, data, and program logic and shape them into persuasive narratives grounded in clarity, evidence, and purpose. Whether drafting a letter of inquiry for a grassroots initiative or preparing a multi-year proposal for an international foundation, you’ll help make the case for why this work matters.
Key Responsibilities
Proposal Development
- Write high-quality proposals, concept notes, and letters of inquiry tailored to funder guidelines
- Coordinate with program, finance, and MEL teams to gather input and ensure alignment across documents
- Edit and adapt proposal templates, boilerplate content, and supporting materials as needed
Research and Pipeline Building
- Identify and vet new funding opportunities from foundations, bilateral and multilateral agencies, and CSR programs
- Maintain a live calendar of deadlines for submissions, renewals, and reporting
- Track progress and outcomes of submitted proposals and gather feedback from funders where possible
Reporting and Fund Communication
- Draft grant reports and funder updates in collaboration with program and finance staff
- Ensure reporting deadlines are met and that all documents reflect progress, transparency, and learning
- Support donor stewardship by helping to craft thank-you letters, briefings, or impact summaries
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
- Work closely with program teams to understand on-the-ground realities, not just metrics
- Keep an updated repository of grant assets including bios, budgets, organizational overviews, and impact data
- Contribute to internal learning on what types of proposals resonate with which funders and why
Who This Role is For
This template is built for organizations looking to bring in someone who’s comfortable writing in a variety of voices, formats, and levels of formality. It works well for people who have already written successful grant proposals and are now looking to take on more complex or varied projects.
You might be a freelancer who’s ready to align more deeply with one organization, or a development professional who’s most energized when you’re at the keyboard, refining a case for support. You enjoy piecing together inputs from different departments and crafting narratives that are both strategic and accessible.
You don’t need to be the loudest voice in the room, but you do need to know how to ask the right questions, manage deadlines independently, and make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience writing grants for nonprofits, NGOs, or social enterprises
- A portfolio of successfully funded proposals, concept notes, or letters of inquiry
- Clear and persuasive writing style adaptable to different audiences and funder types
- Comfort working with program logic, budgets, and monitoring data
- Familiarity with major funders such as Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation, USAID, or regional entities
- Proficiency with remote tools like Google Workspace, Notion, or Airtable
- Strong time management and the ability to work independently across time zones
- Cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural communication skills
