This template is for nonprofits hiring an Assistant Director to support leadership, coordination, and implementation across programs, operations, or strategic initiatives. Assistant Directors are often the second-in-command — they hold together the moving parts of an organization while providing critical thought partnership to the Executive Director or senior leadership team.
This role varies widely depending on your size and structure. In some nonprofits, the Assistant Director may manage programs or teams directly. In others, they serve as the connective tissue between departments or support capacity-building during growth or transition periods.
To tailor this for your organization:
- Clarify what the Assistant Director will own versus support (e.g. Do they lead a team? Oversee day-to-day operations? Handle internal systems?)
- Describe how they will collaborate with leadership and whether this role is a stepping stone to more senior responsibilities
- Adjust the responsibilities and skills based on your specific team makeup and workflows
- Use the “What We’re Looking For” section to describe your internal culture and how this person will thrive in it
- Based on PayScale data, Assistant Directors in nonprofit organizations earn an average of $62,303 annually. We suggest using industry data to establish fair and competitive salaries.
Once finalized, consider posting this position on our Job Board, which attracts experienced nonprofit professionals who possess both operational expertise and dedication to mission-driven leadership.
